Brazilian Taste Recalls Frozen Chicken and Beef Croquette Products Over Undeclared Sesame Allergen

Hans Kissle Recall 11zon

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 4, 2025) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Brazilian Taste, a Lexington, South Carolina–based food manufacturer, is recalling approximately 4,120 pounds of frozen chicken and beef croquettes due to misbranding and an undeclared sesame allergen. According to the FSIS, sesame (a known allergen) was found in bread crumbs used in these products but was not declared on the product labels.

Brazilian Taste recall: quick summary

Regulators said the recall affects Saint Coxinha brand chicken and beef croquettes, which were distributed to retail locations in Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas, as well as sold nationwide online. The issue came to light after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified FSIS that sesame was detected in shared bread-crumb ingredients used across multiple product lines.

No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported so far, but officials urge consumers with sesame allergies to avoid eating the affected products. The company has since ceased distribution of the impacted items and is working with federal regulators to remove them from stores and online sales channels.

What happened?

The FSIS said Brazilian Taste initiated the recall after the FDA notified the agency that bread crumb ingredients shared between FDA-regulated and FSIS-regulated products contained sesame. The undeclared allergen was not listed on the labels of the FSIS-regulated croquettes.

The products were distributed both in-store and online nationwide. According to the agency’s recall notice, “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.”

The recall was announced on November 4, 2025, in coordination with the FSIS. The agency emphasized that some recalled products may still be in consumers’ freezers.

What caused the issue?

According to the FSIS notice, the undeclared sesame originated from a bread crumb ingredient that was shared between sesame-containing and non-sesame products. The agency confirmed that cross-contact occurred during production, leading to misbranded labeling.

Sesame became the ninth major U.S. allergen under the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act in 2023. Even trace amounts can trigger reactions ranging from hives and throat swelling to anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals.

While no illnesses have been reported, regulators encourage anyone who experiences symptoms after consuming these products to seek medical attention immediately.

Behind the brand

Brazilian Taste, based in Lexington, South Carolina, produces a range of Brazilian-style frozen snacks, including its popular Saint Coxinha line. The company stated that it has “ceased distribution of the affected product and is working closely with the FSIS to ensure proper corrective measures.”

Source86 reached out to Brazilian Taste for additional comment on the labeling error, but has not yet received a response.

Other relevant recalls

This recall follows several recent undeclared allergen incidents across the U.S. food industry, including mislabeling issues involving sesame and other major allergens. In the past few months, Gina Marie Bakery, Taylor Farms, and Sheehan Brothers Vending have each issued recalls for products that failed to properly declare allergenic ingredients on their labels. These cases, much like the Brazilian Taste recall, highlight the ongoing challenges companies face in maintaining accurate allergen disclosure and cross-contact prevention.

Eran Mizrahi, CEO of Source86, noted that while this recall may appear isolated, it reflects a systemic challenge:

“Food safety isn’t just about compliance; it’s about trust. Every recall reminds us how vital transparency, rigorous checks, and supplier accountability are in protecting consumers.”

Ensuring safe eats

This recall underscores the ongoing need for accurate allergen labeling and supply chain oversight. As allergen laws evolve, manufacturers must prioritize consumer safety through improved testing and labeling verification.

Consumers should carefully inspect frozen foods before eating and report any concerns to the USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline or via the FSIS online complaint system.

At Source86, we help food brands maintain ingredient traceability, FSQA oversight, and transparent sourcing, ensuring that when recalls happen, supply chains respond quickly and responsibly. Contact us.

FAQs

What should I do if I have already consumed this product?

If you have a sesame allergy and have consumed the recalled croquettes, contact a healthcare provider immediately, even if symptoms seem mild. Report any adverse reactions to the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline.

How can I tell if my product is part of the recall?

Check the back of the package for the establishment number “P-45640” or “Est. 45640.” If your bag matches the listed product names and best-by dates, it should be discarded or returned to the store.

What are the symptoms of a sesame allergy?

Common symptoms include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, nausea, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. Anyone experiencing these reactions should seek emergency medical care.
