SIOUX CITY, Iowa (December 24, 2025) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC is recalling select lots of Country Vet and Heartland Harvest dog biscuits due to the potential presence of Salmonella. According to the FDA, the bacteria can pose health risks to pets that consume the products and to humans who handle them, particularly if proper handwashing does not occur.

Regulators said the recall involves specific 4-pound bags of dog biscuits distributed across multiple Midwestern and Plains states. The agency confirmed that no illnesses have been reported to date, but urged consumers to take precautionary steps.

What happened?

The FDA said Consumers Supply Distributing initiated the recall after a routine sampling program detected Salmonella in finished dog biscuit products. The company told regulators it became aware of the issue during FDA testing, prompting a voluntary recall in coordination with the agency on December 24, 2025.

The recalled products include 4-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor and Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken. The affected lot was distributed through retail stores in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska.

In its recall alert, the FDA warned that “Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands.

The FDA said both products were manufactured under the same lot code, 40906513, which prompted the company to recall all affected units from retail shelves.

What caused the issue?

According to the FDA notice, the recall was triggered after routine sampling revealed the presence of Salmonella bacteria in the finished products. The agency confirmed that Salmonella can cause illness in pets that consume contaminated food and can also pose a risk to humans who handle the products without proper hygiene.

Healthy adults exposed to Salmonella may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, infections can lead to more serious complications. Pets infected with Salmonella may exhibit lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea (which can be bloody), fever, or a reduced appetite. The FDA noted that even asymptomatic pets can act as carriers, potentially spreading the bacteria to other animals or people.

Company officials said in their statement that production and distribution of the affected lot have ceased while the FDA and the company continue investigating the source of the contamination. No illnesses have been reported at this time.

Behind the brand

Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC is based in Sioux City, Iowa, and supplies animal feed and pet products to agricultural and retail partners across several states. The company distributes products under multiple brands, including Country Vet and Heartland Harvest.

In its recall notice, the company stated that it has “ceased the production and distribution of the affected lot” and is working closely with the FDA to determine how the contamination occurred. Source86 reached out to Consumers Supply Distributing for additional comment, but has not yet received a response.

Other relevant recalls

This recall follows a broader pattern of food and pet food recalls tied to Salmonella contamination. Source86 has reported on several similar incidents involving a range of products, from pet treats to human foods, highlighting how pervasive the pathogen remains across supply chains. These include Glaum Egg Ranch’s recall of cage-free eggs linked to a Salmonella outbreak, Mellace Family Brands California Inc.’s recall of Wegmans Deluxe Mixed Nuts Unsalted over possible Salmonella contamination, and Food To Live’s recall of organic moringa powders due to potential Salmonella presence.

Food safety experts note that Salmonella remains one of the most commonly identified pathogens in recall actions, particularly during routine regulatory sampling, underscoring the importance of sanitation controls, environmental monitoring, and ingredient verification across food and pet food manufacturing.

Eran Mizrahi, CEO of Source86, said that while the Consumers Supply Distributing recall centers on a single lot, it highlights a larger industry challenge.

“Food safety isn’t just about compliance; it’s about trust,” Mizrahi said. “Every recall reminds us how vital transparency, rigorous testing, and supplier accountability are across the supply chain.”

Ensuring safe eats

The Consumers Supply Distributing recall underscores the ongoing importance of preventive controls and routine testing in the pet food industry. As regulators continue to monitor products through sampling programs, manufacturers are under increasing pressure to strengthen sanitation, traceability, and quality assurance systems.

For consumers, the FDA’s guidance is clear: stop using the recalled products, return them for a refund, and practice proper hygiene after handling pet food.
