What caused the issue?

The issue stems from contaminated breadcrumbs used by Reser’s Fine Foods in the preparation of tuna salad. Upon discovering the contamination through routine testing, Reser’s notified all partner retailers. Jewel-Osco responded by pulling all affected items and issuing this recall as a precautionary measure.

Why Listeria is a serious concern

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can survive in refrigerated and frozen conditions. It poses significant health risks—especially through ready-to-eat foods like cold salads. Serious infections can result from even small exposures, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Who’s at risk?

High-risk groups include:

  • Pregnant women
  • Older adults
  • Infants and young children
  • People with weakened immune systems (e.g., cancer patients, transplant recipients)

Common symptoms of Listeria infection

  • Persistent fever
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Neck stiffness
  • In pregnant women: miscarriage, stillbirth, or newborn infection

Questions you might have

Is it safe to eat tuna salad from Jewel-Osco right now?
Only if it was purchased outside the sell-by window of July 16–19, 2025. When in doubt, don’t eat it.

Can Listeria be killed by refrigeration or freezing?
No. It can survive and grow in cold environments.

What if I already ate the recalled product?
Monitor for symptoms for up to 70 days. If symptoms appear, contact your healthcare provider.

Where can I find the sell-by date?
Check the front or side of the deli label or packaging—usually near the price sticker.

Can I return the recalled products?
Yes. Jewel-Osco will offer full refunds. You can also safely discard the product if you prefer.

Have any illnesses been reported?
As of July 21, 2025, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

Are other Jewel-Osco deli products affected?
No. Only those containing Reser’s tuna salad with the affected breadcrumbs are included.

How can Listeria affect people?
Infections can lead to meningitis, hospitalization, or death—especially in vulnerable individuals.

Where can I get more information?
