What happened?
This past December 20th, Lidl US recalled a significant amount of their Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables 10.5 oz box for undeclared milk allergen. The products were distributed between 10/21/2023 – 12/19/2024. The product was distributed to all Lidl US store locations in Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. The recall was initiated after it was discovered by the FDA during an inspection that the labels did not list the allergen milk in the ingredient statement.
Company | Brand | Product | Size | Distribution dates | Issue | Picture |
Lidl | Taste of Deutschland | Frozen Buttered Vegetables, Carrots, Peas, Cauliflower, & Corn | 10.5 oz box | 10/21/2023 – 12/19/2024 | Undeclared milk |
What caused the issue?
Due to a mislabeling error, the products didn’t declare milk on them. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. This is one of the eight most common food allergens, and when it’s not disclosed on a product’s label, it can be a major problem. This is because some immune systems confuse certain proteins found in milk as harmful. Your body goes on full alert mode and it releases histamine and other chemicals that cause allergic signs and symptoms. Among the most common food allergens we can find:
- Cow’s milk (dairy)
- Egg
- Peanut
- Tree nuts
- Sesame
- Soy
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Wheat
No illnesses have been reported to date.

Behind the brand
Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, better known by its trademark Lidl, is a German discount supermarket chain. It operates in thirty countries and is part of the Schwarz group, one of the largest distribution conglomerates in Europe.
Unfortunately, they aren’t the only company dealing with undeclared allergens this month. Jose Madrid Salsa issued a voluntary recall of its Chipotle Con Queso Salsa on December 20. The recall was triggered after an inspection by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, acting on behalf of the FDA, identified undeclared Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 in the ingredient list. Also, on December 19 Orgain, the popular maker of plant-based protein powders, voluntarily issued a recall for a batch of its 30g Plant Protein Complete Protein Powder – Chocolate (2.01lb tubs) because the product could contain peanut residue.
Ensuring safe eats!
When it comes to food safety, this kind of mix-up can have serious repercussions—not just for the consumer, but for the entire food industry. Mislabeling is a big deal, and companies need to ensure that allergens are clearly marked. In this case, the lack of a milk warning could’ve led to an emergency. This recall is a reminder to all brands about the importance of thorough inspections and accurate labeling.
“Food safety is an essential responsibility that every company in the supply chain must take seriously. Even a small oversight—like missing an allergen on a label—can have serious consequences for consumers. This recall serves as a reminder that every ingredient, every label, and every detail matters. We must always prioritize transparency and vigilance to protect public health and maintain trust with the people who rely on us.” Eran Mizrahi, Source86’ CEO.
