What happened?

On January 17, 2025, Nature View Dairy issued a recall for its bottled raw milk after two confirmed cases of Campylobacter infections were linked to the product. The Connecticut Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the FDA, has ordered the company to halt raw milk production following additional positive test results for the bacteria. The recall affects raw milk sold at farm stores and natural food grocers across the state.

Campylobacter contamination

 What caused the issue?

Campylobacter contamination occurs when raw milk is exposed to bacteria commonly found in animal feces. This bacteria can thrive in unpasteurized dairy products and lead to serious health risks.

Health risks:
  • Campylobacter infection, known as campylobacteriosis, can cause gastrointestinal illness.
  • Severe cases can lead to complications such as dehydration, irritable bowel syndrome, and even Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder.
  • Those most at risk include children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of Infection:
  • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue and muscle pain

The Connecticut Department of Public Health urges consumers who experience these symptoms after consuming the recalled milk to seek medical attention. As of now, two confirmed cases have been reported, with no additional hospitalizations or severe complications disclosed.

  1. What is Campylobacter?
It is a bacteria commonly found in raw and undercooked foods, particularly poultry and dairy products.
  2. How does raw milk get contaminated?
Contamination occurs when bacteria from animal feces enter the milk during the milking process.
  3. What are the risks of drinking raw milk?
Potential foodborne illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations.
  4. Can boiling raw milk kill Campylobacter?
Yes, pasteurization or boiling can kill harmful bacteria.
  5. How long do symptoms last?
Symptoms usually last about one week but can persist longer in severe cases.
  6. Is there treatment available?
Most cases resolve on their own, but severe infections may require antibiotics.
  7. What should I do if I drank the recalled milk?
Monitor for symptoms and seek medical attention if needed.
  8. Can pets get sick from Campylobacter?
Yes, pets can also become infected if they consume contaminated milk.
  9. Where was the recalled milk sold?
It was available at farm stores and select natural food grocers across Connecticut.
  10. Will there be further recalls?
The company is working with authorities to ensure all affected products are removed.

Behind the brand

Nature View Dairy, a trusted name in Connecticut’s raw dairy market, has long upheld a reputation for quality. However, this isn’t the first time the brand has faced a recall. On October 8, 2024, the company recalled its bottled raw milk due to the same issue, Campylobacter contamination concerns. This latest recall raises significant questions about the safety of unpasteurized milk and the challenges in maintaining product integrity in the raw dairy industry.

Ensuring safe eats

Food safety is critical in the dairy industry and recalls like this underscore the importance of stringent quality control measures. Preventing bacterial contamination requires rigorous testing and adherence to safety protocols. Consumers and businesses alike should stay informed about food safety risks and take proactive steps to ensure product integrity.

Quick reminder: If you have Nature View Dairy raw milk at home, stop using it and return it for a refund.Looking for reliable, high-quality ingredients? Contact our team at Source86 for safe and compliant ingredient solutions. Let’s talk today!
