Protein’s the new black: The trend that’s flexing Its muscles into 2025!

A cartoon of a green plant with arms, eyes and legs, flexing muscles and smiling. Wearing a green shirt and green pants and white sneakers. Over a green background.

In case you haven’t noticed, protein has officially muscled its way to the top of food trends. In fact, it’s the ingredient that refuses to lose its edge, flexing its muscles well into 2025. From plant-based options to protein-packed snacks, the demand for this essential nutrient is at an all-time high, and it’s shaping the way we think about our food, health, and even the planet. Let’s take a look at why protein is flexing hard and in the meantime, go check our bulk catalog for some amazing protein options!

Plant power

In the past few years, plant-based protein has gone from being a very specific choice to a mainstream powerhouse. Sources like pea protein, soy, lentils, and hemp have become popular. What’s driving this trend? For starters, the demand for flexitarian diets is increasing: an eating routine that includes a vegan diet with a flexible addition of meats and fish every once in a while. More people are incorporating plant-based meals into their lives, but they still want to make sure they’re getting enough protein. The beauty of plant-based proteins is that they provide not only the muscle-building benefits of traditional animal-based protein but also come with added fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. Sounds like a great deal to me! Brands like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat have paved the way for plant-based meats that replicate the taste, texture, and nutritional profile of animal products.

Functional foods, come to the front

The demand for functional foods that do more than just fill you up is growing. Among the food trends forecasted by the Specialty Food Association, foods that add significant value to your life quality were in the 2025 prediction. Protein is now considered not just as a muscle builder, but as an all-around functional ingredient that helps with everything from taking your hunger away to mental focus. With the rise of the gut health movement, protein is also being incorporated into fermented foods and drinks, contributing to digestive health. We’re also seeing collagen protein get very popular, particularly in wellness and beauty products. Collagen supplements are super recommended for their potential skin and joint benefits, you’ve definitely seen them everywhere in the supplements aisle: Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides,  TruSkin Collagen Boosting Skin Supplement, Goli Nutrition Superfruits Gummies, and the list goes on.

Smart snacking

6 granola protein bars.

Name something better than a snack, we’ll wait. And if it’s healthy, ten times better! Protein is being seamlessly integrated into snacks we eat on the go. Think protein-enhanced chips (Whisps Very Cheddar Popped), edamame snacks (Crunchy Roasted Edamame Bean Snack – Sea Salt), protein-enriched granola bars (RXBAR), and even crispy chickpea snacks (The Good Bean Crunchy Chickpeas). With more consumers opting for smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, companies are catering to this shift with high-protein, easy-to-eat options that provide lasting energy. After all, who wants to crash after a 3 p.m. snack break when you can enjoy something that both satisfies hunger and boosts your energy levels?

Sustainability meets protein

The demand for sustainable, eco-friendly foods is also making protein sources a focal point for environmentally-conscious consumers. Animal agriculture has long been a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and as climate change becomes a more pressing issue, people are looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint. This is why alternative proteins—from plant-based meats to insects—are gaining traction. One of the new superfoods that are taking the spotlight in this space is algae-based protein. Algae is highly sustainable, grows quickly, and requires far fewer resources than traditional crops or livestock. Brands are already incorporating algae into everything from smoothies to granola bars.

Protein is stickin’ around!

Whether it’s snacking, sustainability, or just the desire for more filling meals, protein is proving to be the fuel for the future. Wanna hop on the trend? Shoot us a message and let’s make your business future-proof!
