Salmonella contamination

The issue was discovered when the Washington State Department of Agriculture tested samples on March 4, 2025, which came back positive for Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed at the North 40 store in Washington State.

What caused the issue?

The contamination is linked to Salmonella, a harmful bacterium that can be introduced during processing, packaging, or through exposure to contaminated raw materials. Poor sanitation, improper handling, or cross-contamination from infected sources can also contribute to outbreaks.

Who’s at risk?
  • Pets – Dogs that consume contaminated pig ears may experience diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. Severe cases can lead to systemic infections.
  • Pet Owners – Handling contaminated treats without washing hands can result in infection.
  • Young children, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised people – These groups face a higher risk of severe symptoms if they come into contact with contaminated products.
  • Other pets in the household – Even if one pet seems fine, it could spread the bacteria to others.

Symptoms in humans include fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, with more severe cases leading to complications like dehydration, arthritis, or bloodstream infections.

Questions you might have:
  1. Can humans get sick from handling these treats?
Yes, humans can contract Salmonella by handling contaminated treats and not washing their hands properly.
  2. Is my pet at risk if they ate the recalled pig ears?
If your pet has eaten the recalled product, monitor for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. If any symptoms occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  3. What should I do if I already fed this to my pet?
Monitor your pet’s health. If symptoms arise, seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
  4. Where can I return the recalled product?
You can return the product to the store where it was purchased for a refund or dispose of it safely.
  5. How do I properly dispose of the recalled treats?
Seal the product in a plastic bag and place it in the trash where pets, children, and wildlife cannot access it.
  6. Are all Supercan Bulk products affected?
No, only the specific recalled lot of Supercan Pig Ear Slivers – Thick Cut Piggy Ear Slices with the expiration date 11/09/2026.
  7. How do I know if I have the recalled product?
Check the expiration date 11/09/2026 on the back of the bag. If it matches, your product is part of the recall.
  8. Are there any similar pet treat recalls recently?
Yes, other pet treat recalls have occurred in recent months. Check the FDA recall list for updated information.
  9. How can I prevent buying contaminated pet treats in the future?
Buy from reliable suppliers, check recall lists regularly, and look for brands that follow strict safety protocols.
  10. How do I report an issue with a pet food product?
You can report food safety concerns to the FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal or contact the manufacturer directly.

Behind the brand

Supercan Bulk is no stranger to the pet industry, but this recall raises concerns about quality control. While this is the first pig ear recall for the company, Salmonella-related pet treat recalls aren’t uncommon. Similar recalls in recent months include:

  • Blue Ridge Mix – Natural Mix Recall
  • Blue Ridge Mix – Kitten Mix Recall

“Managing a recall isn’t just about damage control—it’s a chance to showcase a company’s dedication to safety and transparency. Swift action and open communication reassure customers and reinforce trust, proving that quality and responsibility are at the heart of every product.” Eran Mizrahi, Source86’s CEO.

Ensuring safe eats

Recalls like this highlight why food safety matters. Whether it’s for humans or pets, contaminated products can pose serious risks. Companies must have strict testing, supplier vetting, and preventive measures to avoid these issues.
