What happened?

Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC has issued a recall of certain oyster products distributed in Canada and the United States. The recall, announced on December 27, 2024, follows an investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) into a foodborne illness outbreak. 77 cases of norovirus-like illness were reported in the Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, and Island Health regions between November 1 and December 20. The affected oysters were harvested from British Columbia, Canada (growing area BC 14-8 LF# 0278741 and LF# 0335309) on November 27, December 3, and December 5, and were processed up to December 13, 2024. They were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, as well as in California and possibly other U.S. states.

What caused the issue?

The contamination was linked to Norovirus, a highly contagious virus that can cause gastroenteritis. Symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

These symptoms can be particularly severe for individuals with compromised immune systems. So far, no deaths have been reported, but the outbreak highlights the risks associated with consuming contaminated shellfish. According to health officials, food contaminated with Norovirus may appear normal, making it essential to heed the recall instructions.

Norovirus is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide. It is highly contagious and can be transmitted through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or close contact with infected individuals. The virus resists many common disinfectants, making thorough cleaning and prevention measures crucial.

  1. What is Norovirus? Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
  2. How is Norovirus transmitted? It spreads through contaminated food or water, touching contaminated surfaces, or close contact with an infected person.
  3. What are the symptoms of Norovirus? Common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches. Symptoms usually appear 12-48 hours after exposure.
  4. How long does Norovirus illness last? Most people recover within 1-3 days, but symptoms can be more severe and prolonged in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
  5. Can Norovirus cause severe illness? Yes, severe dehydration can occur, especially in vulnerable populations, requiring medical attention.
  6. How can I prevent Norovirus infection? Wash hands frequently, clean and disinfect surfaces, wash fruits and vegetables, and ensure shellfish is cooked thoroughly.
  7. What should I do if I suspect Norovirus contamination? Dispose of contaminated food, clean surfaces with a bleach-based solution, and avoid preparing food while symptomatic.
  8. Are there long-term effects of Norovirus? Most people recover without lasting effects, but some may experience prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms.
  9. How is Norovirus diagnosed? Diagnosis is typically based on symptoms, but laboratory tests of stool samples can confirm the virus.
  10. Is there a treatment for Norovirus? There is no specific treatment. Staying hydrated is crucial to prevent complications from dehydration.

Behind the brand

Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC, known for its high-quality seafood, has faced previous recalls due to similar issues. The company has since suspended production of the affected products and is working closely with regulators to address the contamination. This brand wasn’t the only one who recalled its oysters over Norovirus contamination,  this month Rudy’s Shellfish and S&M Shellfish issued a recall on their Oysters and Manila Clams for the same reason. As well as Ruco’s Shellfish, that also recalled its Oysters for Norovirus contamination.

“Food safety recalls highlight the critical importance of maintaining stringent quality controls throughout the entire supply chain. From harvest to distribution, every step must adhere to rigorous standards to protect public health. Such incidents remind us that proactive measures and transparency are vital in preventing contamination and ensuring consumer trust in our food systems.”  Eran Mizrahi, Source86’ CEO.

Ensuring safe eats

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent food safety measures. Norovirus outbreaks can disrupt the supply chain, leading to significant costs for businesses and consumers alike. Here’s why it matters:

  • Industry Impact: Recalls damage trust in brands and the seafood industry.
  • Consumer Health: Contaminated food poses serious health risks.
  • Preventative Steps: Companies must prioritize rigorous testing and sanitation protocols.
