What happened?
You might’ve seen a video or two lately about people eating or cooking Asian food (ASMR lovers come to the front) and, in said videos, there’s this stringy-looking thing they douse in gochujang sauce that looks divine. Those ladies and gentlemen, are Enoki Mushrooms, a long, thin, white mushroom with a mild flavor and a crunchy texture. Since globalization impacts every aspect of life including the food industry, these tiny little and versatile fungi have been very popular amongst consumers over the past few years. Given the increasing interest in society in eating healthy, sustainable, and nutritious food, these sprouts have experienced significant growth in the market because not only are they delicious, but they also have many health benefits:
- Highly nutritious (Vitamin B, fiber, thiamine, and more)
- Rich in antioxidants
- Support heart health
- Improve brain function
- Enhance immunity
On November 5th, the West Coast company recalled their “Enoki Mushrooms 200g” that were distributed to multiple retail stores across West Virginia and were sold on 8/20/2024 and 8/23/2024 with 240 cases for each date, due to a positive routine test conducted by the FDA that revealed the presence of Listeria. The product comes in a 200-gram, clear plastic package marked with barcode # 4711498860019 on the backside.
Brand | Product | Size | UPC | Distributed on | Issue |
HH Fresh Trading Corp | Taiwan Enoki Mushrooms | 200g | 4711498860019 | 8/20/2024 – 8/23/2024 | Listeria |
What caused the issue?
These shrooms had the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to the FDA. So far, no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
