What happened?
This past November 5th, the Madison dairy store recalled approximately 41 cases of their delicious Orange Custard Chocolate Chip ice cream, why? Well, as luck has it, a mistake put the wrong label on the wrong flavor. This orange treat ended up inside a Chocolate Peanut Butter case. These products were produced on September 17th and distributed to local establishments and directly to customers in Wisconsin. The issue was discovered by a customer and this packaging confusion led to a flavor in a container without the right allergens listed.

What caused the issue?
The company issued a recall after a customer found out that the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor actually had Orange Custard Chocolate Chip inside. This mislabeling caused an undeclared allergen problem since the orange treat may contain eggs. According to the FDA, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs or yellow #5 run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. Eggs are one of the eight most common food allergens, and when they’re not disclosed on a product’s label, it can be a major problem. This is because some immune systems confuse certain egg proteins as harmful. Your body goes on full alert mode and it releases histamine and other chemicals that cause allergic signs and symptoms. A bite of a tasty chocolate chip treat could end up causing hives, stomach troubles, or worse—an allergic reaction that requires immediate attention. So, even if your sweet tooth is in full swing, check those labels, people! Among the most common food allergens we can find:
- Cow’s milk (dairy)
- Egg
- Peanut
- Tree nuts
- Sesame
- Soy
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Wheat.
So far, there have been no reports of illness associated with these products.
