MINNEAPOLIS, MN (December 10, 2025) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health is voluntarily recalling one lot of Nutrena® Country Feeds® Cracked Corn for livestock after regulators said the product may contain aflatoxin levels above the FDA action limit for certain species. According to the FDA, the affected lot poses health risks to immature animals, wildlife, equines, small ruminants, and dairy animals.
Cargill recall: quick summary
According to the FDA, Cargill issued the recall after state officials detected elevated aflatoxin levels during routine sampling. The company confirmed that the recall affects only one lot and that it has received no reports of illnesses or injuries. The company distributed the 50 lb. bags exclusively in Texas through retail locations. Aflatoxins (naturally occurring toxins produced by certain molds) can cause severe health effects in livestock, particularly young or lactating animals.

What happened?
The Office of the Texas State Chemist issued the recall after it found 35 ppb of aflatoxins in a sample of the cracked corn, exceeding the FDA’s action level for vulnerable species. The FDA said Cargill initiated the recall after discovering the discrepancy, noting that the company’s retained sample from the same lot tested at under 1 ppb. Cargill announced the recall on December 9, 2025, in coordination with the FDA.
The products were manufactured in Texas and distributed through retail stores across the state. Lot and date information can be found on the bottom-right side of the product label.
In its recall alert, the FDA warned that “livestock exposed to elevated levels of aflatoxin may experience reduced feed intake, immune suppression, decreased production, and in severe cases, liver damage.”

Behind the brand
Cargill is one of the largest global suppliers of animal feed and nutrition products. In its recall notice, the company said it has “ceased distribution of the affected product” and is working with the FDA to determine the cause. Source86 reached out to Cargill for additional comment, but has not yet received a response.
Other relevant recalls
Recent aflatoxin- or contaminant-related recalls reported by Source86 include similar incidents involving livestock feeds and grain-based products. Source86 has also covered contamination issues in the pet sector, such as the Best Buy Bones recall of Nature’s Own Pet Chews Bully Bites for potential Salmonella contamination and the Darwin’s Natural Pet Products recall linked to E. coli and Salmonella. Food safety experts note that aflatoxin contamination often occurs when grain is exposed to moisture during storage, creating conditions that allow toxigenic molds to grow.
“Livestock producers should test for aflatoxin, which can cause reduced feed intake, reduced weight gain, liver damage, jaundice and eventually death,” said Tim Evans, veterinary toxicologist with the University of Missouri Extension.
Eran Mizrahi, CEO of Source86, said the recall underscores a larger industry reality:
“Food safety isn’t just about compliance; it’s about trust. Every recall reminds us how vital it is to maintain transparency and rigorous supplier accountability.”
Ensuring safe eats
This recall highlights the ongoing challenges of keeping grain-based feed safe, particularly in warm and humid environments that promote mold growth. Proper storage, testing, and batch controls are essential to protecting livestock and the food supply. Consumers should dispose of the affected product or return it promptly.
