What happened?
This past October 31st, Danvers, Massachusetts. R. Walters LLC dba Elevation Foods is recalling 1,668 units of mislabeled Hannaford Seafood Salad 12oz because it contains an undeclared Soy allergen. This product is only sold at Hannaford Grocery Stores, and they were distributed to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York locations between 10/25/24 and 10/29/24.
Brand | Product | Size | UPC | Best by | Issue |
Hannaford | Seafood Salad | 12 oz | 0 41268 25161 2 | 11/13/24 -11/14/24 | Undeclared soy |
What caused the issue?
Why did this happen? The company discovered that the printer of the labels for Hannaford Seafood Salad that were sent to Elevation Foods didn’t match the current product formulation. These labels were created for an upcoming formulation change and were shipped to Elevation Foods by mistake. Soy is one of the eight most common food allergens, and when they’re not disclosed on a product’s label, it can be a major problem. This is because some immune systems confuse certain egg proteins as harmful. Your body goes on full alert mode and it releases histamine and other chemicals that cause allergic signs and symptoms. A bite of a this delicious seafood dish could end up causing hives, stomach troubles, or worse—an allergic reaction that requires immediate attention. To date, Elevation Foods is not aware of any reports of consumer illness related to this product.

Behind the brand
What started with a small produce cart in 1883 is now Maine’s largest grocery chain, with multiple stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. Owned by one of the world’s largest food retail groups, Ahold Delhaize, this company has “all things fresh” as its main focus and it shows. As you walk into the stores, you’re greeted by a wide variety of locally grown fruits and veggies, meats, bakery items, and more! On top of that, they have a large selection of prepared and delicious-looking to-go foods, with things on the menu like chicken wings, pasta salads, subs, and lobster rolls, yes, lobster.
Although mistakes can happen, a food allergen mislabel can become a serious issue. Unfortunately, when it comes to recalls, this is not Hannaford’s first rodeo. This very month, the grocery store chain issued another recall for its fresh salads, pasta meals, and their private brand frozen waffles, due to possible Listeria contamination. As for this specific recall Hannaford has been notified and has removed the product from store shelves all across the five states.
