CHICAGO — If you’ve ever worked under the Golden Arches, Thursday, January 8, 2026 is your day. McDonald’s USA officially declared the date as the first-ever “1 in 8 Day,” a national celebration recognizing the statistic that one in eight Americans has worked at a McDonald’s restaurant at some point in their lives.
This new annual observance is designed to honor the over 40 million past and present crew members who have staffed the chain’s grills and counters. The initiative moves beyond a simple “thank you” to focus on mentorship and career development, highlighting how skills learned during the “lunch rush” translate to future success.
Arches and Ambition: The Mentorship Program
Central to the launch is the “Arches and Ambition: The 1 in 8 Mentorship Program.” This four-part YouTube series pairs current crew members with successful alumni who have gone on to careers in entrepreneurship, culinary arts, fashion, and sports.
The pilot cohort features unique mentorship pairings:
- New Orleans: Jade Colin, one of the youngest Black female franchise owners, mentors Justin Hicks, an aspiring entrepreneur.
- Los Angeles: Michelin-recognized Chef John Liu (owner of Chifa) mentors Abigail “Abby” Robles, a manager and small business baker.
- Milwaukee: Fashion stylist Tamy Idrobo teams up with Marie Perez, an aspiring actress.
- Queens, NY: Pro BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester guides photographer and crew trainer Brijanna Crawford through the design process for his new merch line, “Employee of the Month”.
Myra Doria, National Field President of McDonald’s USA and a former crew member herself, emphasized the program’s goal.
Doria stated:
“I am so proud to be part of the McDonald’s brand because of programs like Arches and Ambition that provide ways for our Crew members to pursue those ambitions. These opportunities help our Crew envision a brighter future by connecting them with successful alumni who once stood where they are today.”

Changing the Narrative on “McJobs”
For decades, the term “McJob” was often used pejoratively. With “1 in 8 Day,” McDonald’s is aggressively reclaiming the narrative, positioning restaurant employment not as a dead-end, but as a foundational “bootcamp” for soft skills like teamwork, crisis management, and customer service.
By leveraging high-profile alumni like Nigel Sylvester and highlighting success stories within its own franchise network, the brand is building a powerful alumni network that rivals major universities in scale, if not prestige.
How to Participate
The celebration extends to local restaurants, where customers are encouraged to give a “nugget of appreciation” to current staff. The brand is also urging the massive 1-in-8 alumni network to share their stories on social media using the hashtag #1in8Day. Contact Us!
