What happened?
Minnesota-based, Russ Davis Wholesale is recalling multiple products because they contain recalled cucumbers from Baloian Farms, which can possibly be contaminated with Salmonella. Yes, this bacteria has been on a rampage this holiday season. The potential for contamination was noted after trace forward indicated that Baloian Farms cucumbers had been processed and distributed through Russ Davis Wholesale. The recalled items were distributed to food service and retail customers in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
What caused the issue?
Salmonella, is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. So far, no illnesses have been reported to the company in connection with this problem.

Behind the brand
Russ Davis Wholesale was started in 1955 by Russ Davis as a one-truck business. In 1968, Russ and his son Gary expanded the operations by building an 8,000 sq. foot warehouse in Wadena, MN. From there, the Company continued to expand its territory, serving many of the independently owned, family-run grocery stores that dotted the landscape. Today, Russ Davis Wholesale is a vertically integrated company of 800+ employee-owners and is a premier wholesale distributor and processor of fresh fruits and vegetables in the Midwest.
Unfortunately, this is not the only Salmonella case a company has had recently. This past November 27, mega-brand Costco issued a recall for their private label brand Kirkland Signature eggs, due to Salmonella. The very next day, SunFed LLC issued a recall for their Whole Fresh American Cucumbers also, and guess what the issue was? Yes, Salmonella.
Ensuring safe eats!
It’s always a good idea to stay on top of recalls, especially in today’s world where food contamination can happen quickly and unexpectedly. This situation serves as a reminder for both suppliers and consumers that food safety is no joke. As a consumer, make sure you’re checking labels and staying informed about any recalls. For brands like Russ Davis Wholesale, the lesson here is clear: stay vigilant and always act quickly to protect your customers.
“At Source86, we understand that food safety is the foundation of trust between suppliers and consumers. Every step, from sourcing ingredients to delivery, is handled with the utmost care to ensure the highest standards of quality. A recall not only disrupts businesses but can also erode consumer confidence, which is why we are committed to proactive measures and constant vigilance. It’s our responsibility to protect both public health and the integrity of the food supply chain.” Eran Mizrahi, Source86’ CEO.
