Shake Shack Partners with Coco Robotics for Autonomous Delivery in Chicago

Chicago, Ill. — Shake Shack launched autonomous robot delivery service through Coco Robotics at two Chicago locations via Uber Eats. The zero emission delivery robots integrate directly into Shake Shack’s existing Uber Eats ordering system, with plans to expand the service to additional Chicago sites.

According to Coco Robotics’ announcement, the robots operate on sidewalks navigating to customers’ designated pickup locations. Coco has completed over 500,000 deliveries since its 2020 founding, serving customers in the U.S. and Europe. The company positions itself as the world’s largest urban robot delivery platform.

Steph So, Chief Growth Officer at Shake Shack, stated in the press release:

“At Shake Shack, we’re always looking for new ways to meet our guests where they are, and this partnership gives us another convenient option to bring the Shack experience to them, especially during the colder months. We’re excited to see how this technology can make things easier and more fun for both our guests and our team. The robots are intuitive, easy to work with, and bring a little extra joy to delivery.”

Shake Shack operates over 630 locations system wide, including over 405 in 34 U.S. states and more than 225 international locations.

Robot Delivery Integration

Coco’s robots integrate directly into Shake Shack’s Uber Eats ordering system, eliminating manual order entry for restaurant staff. Orders transfer from kitchen preparation to curbside pickup where robots complete final delivery to customers. The system requires no additional fees, tips, or extra steps from customers.

The robots operate in high traffic urban areas on sidewalks. Shake Shack positions the technology as enabling more order fulfillment during peak hours while improving delivery timing consistency. The partnership allows restaurant teams to manage increased delivery volume without additional staffing.

Melissa Fahs, Chief Commercial Officer at Coco Robotics, stated in the press release:

“Shake Shack has redefined what a fine casual experience looks like, and we’re proud to help extend that same level of care to their delivery orders. By integrating Coco’s autonomous delivery technology into Shake Shack’s operations with Uber Eats in Chicago, we’re supporting their mission to bring great food and hospitality to more guests, efficiently, sustainably, and with the same care that defines every Shack experience.”

Why It Matters

Shake Shack’s robot delivery partnership demonstrates how restaurant chains are testing autonomous delivery technology to manage labor costs and expand delivery capacity. For food service suppliers and restaurant equipment manufacturers, autonomous delivery adoption affects packaging requirements and order fulfillment processes.

Robot delivery creates specific packaging considerations. Food containers must maintain temperature and structural integrity during autonomous transport without human handlers adjusting items during transit. Packaging suppliers developing robot compatible containers require designs preventing spills and maintaining food quality through mechanical handling.

The integration with existing Uber Eats systems indicates technology partnerships rather than proprietary delivery infrastructure. Quick service and fast casual chains evaluating delivery automation can partner with established robot operators rather than developing in house autonomous fleets. This lowers entry barriers for chains testing delivery robotics.

For restaurant equipment suppliers, autonomous delivery integration affects kitchen workflow design. Orders designated for robot delivery may require separate staging areas from traditional delivery and dine in orders. Kitchen layout optimization becomes more complex as restaurants manage multiple fulfillment channels simultaneously.

The Chicago pilot location strategy allows Shake Shack to test operations in controlled markets before broader deployment. Co manufacturers and suppliers serving Shake Shack can anticipate potential changes in delivery volume patterns and packaging specifications if robot delivery expands nationally.
