What happened?
The veggie products by Supreme Produce, sold at Kroger and King Soopers stores in Texas and Colorado, have been linked to a potential Salmonella contamination. The whole situation started when Sunfed Produce was notified by the FDA that some of their cucumbers could be behind a wave of salmonellosis illnesses that happened between October 12 and November 15. Sunfed initiated the recall to prevent further risks to consumers and multiple products, including this brand, have been added to the list.
What caused the issue?
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with this bacteria can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. No victims have been reported yet.

Ensuring safe eats!
This recall is a great example of why we all need to stay vigilant when it comes to food safety. Whether you’re a producer, a retailer, or a consumer, ensuring that products are free from harmful bacteria is a shared responsibility. Companies like Sunfed need to continue prioritizing food safety, especially when it comes to pre-packaged, fresh produce.
“As an industry, we must always be proactive when it comes to food safety. A recall, even one involving fresh produce, is a stark reminder of how quickly something can go wrong. It’s crucial that all levels of the supply chain—from growers to distributors to retailers—work together to ensure the food we put on consumers’ tables is safe. No one should ever have to question the safety of the food they eat, and this is why constant vigilance and transparency are key to maintaining consumer trust.” Eran Mizrahi, Source86’ CEO.
