Sustainability is a major criteria for most consumers. But when you’re traveling, you often have to settle for what’s available.
With the launch of Sustainably Sourced, Nestlé’s new travel retail confectionery brand, sustainable snacking (and last-minute gift purchases) will be possible in airports around the world.
We invite you to check out our bulk products catalog, featuring a variety of high-quality ingredients available for bulk purchase. Explore our offerings and enhance your retail offerings.
The ingredients going into the new Nestlé Sustainably Sourced range will be sourced solely through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. The Nestlé Cocoa Plan was established 15 years ago and currently engages over 170,000 families. The sustainability program is founded on three pillars:
- Better Farming: Improving livelihoods in communities;
- Better Lives: Improving social conditions for farming families
- Better Cocoa: Improving product sustainability
The sustainably sourced cocoa used in the new line of products will be certified by the Rainforest Alliance. The Rainforest Alliance helps organizations and parties throughout the supply chain contribute to a more sustainable way of sourcing cocoa. From farming communities to importers and suppliers, Rainforest Alliance certification shows that companies are committed to strengthening the cocoa industry instead of just capitalizing off of it.
“Through creative branding, we can provide transparency on the origin of the cocoa used in our chocolate. It enables us to raise awareness about our longstanding commitments to supporting cocoa-farming families and the long-term sustainability of cocoa production.”
Aura Sanchez, Head of Marketing at Nestlé Travel Retail

But what stands out most may be the packaging of this new range.
Similar to the brand’s Smarties line, the new range will be packaged in an all-recyclable paper pouch rather than plastic and tin foil wrappers that cannot be recycled. But Nestlé is taking the impact of its packaging seriously this time round.
Consumers (or rather travelers) will get a chance to not just personalize the sleeves with personal messages but also to explore the sustainable journey behind the product and its production journey through links and resources supplied on the packaging itself.
This new range of confectionery products comes short on the heels of Nestlé’s launch of a historic first, a KitKat made from 100% traceable cocoa ingredients, sourced directly from the farming families it supports. Outside of the chocolate world, Nestlé’s coffee arm has also announced plans to invest more than $1 billion in the search for more sustainable coffee bean sourcing journeys.
What’s more, is that Nestlé’s announcement comes just weeks after Hershey’s announcement that it was committed to strengthening its already 100% independently sourced cocoa supply chain with full sourcing visibility by 2025.
Sustainability and sustainably sourced ingredients (whether it’s bulk cocoa or wholesale ingredients of any other sort) shouldn’t be an afterthought for private-label brands any longer. It should be the main source of inspiration, the driving force behind branding, sourcing, product R&D, and most importantly, your choice of manufacturers, importers, and suppliers.
