DALLAS — Smoothie King has partnered with Grillo’s Pickles to launch a limited-edition Pickle Smoothie. The drink combines pickles, bananas, organic kale, and coconut water in a hydration-focused beverage timed to International Pickle Day on May 16.
The smoothie is now available nationwide at participating Smoothie King locations for $5.99 for a 20-ounce serving. Customers visiting stores on May 16 can also receive a free 4-ounce sample while supplies last.
Pickle-flavored foods continue to gain traction across the broader CPG and foodservice industries. Consumers are driving the trend through growing interest in bold flavors, fermentation, and functional hydration ingredients. Smoothie King said it designed the collaboration to combine nutritional positioning with a trend-driven menu innovation.
Consumers can find the product through the brand’s smoothie offerings and seasonal hydration lineup on the company’s official menu pages. The launch also coincides with the return of Smoothie King’s watermelon smoothie lineup for summer.
According to the official announcement from PR Newswire, the smoothie blends “real Grillo’s Pickles” with ingredients intended to support hydration through naturally occurring electrolytes.
Pickles move further into functional beverage territory
The collaboration reflects a broader movement within the beverage industry. Brands are increasingly experimenting with savory flavors and unconventional ingredients. The strategy is aimed at younger consumers seeking novelty and wellness benefits.
According to Lori Primavera, vice president of R&D and product marketing at Smoothie King, the company viewed pickles as both a cultural trend and a functional ingredient opportunity.
“Pickles are not only delicious, but they also have a cultural moment. They also offer real nutritional benefits, especially known for their enhanced hydration,” Primavera said in the company announcement.
Mark Luker, chief commercial officer at Grillo’s Pickles, described the collaboration as an opportunity to balance the brand’s playful marketing approach with more functional messaging around hydration.
The launch also extends Grillo’s recent expansion into lifestyle-focused collaborations. The pickle company was founded in Boston in 2008. Since then, it has grown its distribution to more than 31,000 stores nationwide. Grillo’s also recently expanded production capacity with a new facility in Indiana.

Why it matters
The pickle smoothie launch highlights how CPG and quick-service brands increasingly lean into “unexpected flavor innovation” to drive social engagement and limited-time traffic.
Consumers have turned pickles into a recurring ingredient trend across snacks, beverages, and condiments. They continue to show strong interest in fermentation, gut health, sodium-based hydration, and nostalgic comfort flavors.
At the same time, brands are competing for attention in crowded digital spaces. Unusual product launches can quickly generate viral discussion and online engagement.
For Smoothie King, the partnership reinforces a broader strategy around functional beverages and hydration-focused products. For Grillo’s, the collaboration pushes the pickle brand deeper into lifestyle positioning beyond traditional refrigerated grocery aisles.
The launch also demonstrates how foodservice brands are blending wellness messaging, internet culture, and limited-time exclusivity. The goal is to create conversation-driven menu innovation.
