A nut a day keeps the heart doctor away!

Varieties of Nuts

It’s no secret that nuts are a delicious, nutritious snack, but did you know they might also be a powerful ally in reducing your risk of heart disease? A recent study published in the journal Nutrients on January 17, 2025, provides some compelling evidence that longer-term mixed nut consumption can significantly reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in older adults, especially those who are overweight or obese.

This research, funded by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), adds to a growing body of evidence showing that incorporating mixed nuts into your diet can have serious heart health benefits, particularly for those at higher risk of developing cardiovascular issues.

The nuts and bolts of the study

The study was a randomized, controlled trial, meaning the participants were assigned to either a control group (no nut consumption) or an intervention group (60 grams of mixed nuts daily). It involved 28 adults aged 50-75, all of whom were overweight or obese. The participants followed this routine for 16 weeks, with an 8-week washout period between the two phases. During the intervention phase, they ate 60 grams of mixed nuts a day, including walnuts, pistachios, cashews, and hazelnuts.

Why these specific nuts? Well, each of these nuts is known for being rich in heart-healthy fats, fiber, and essential nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. The study used cutting-edge NMR metabolomics techniques to analyze how the daily consumption of mixed nuts affected the participants’ blood lipids, specifically focusing on lipoprotein particles, which are key indicators of cardiovascular health.

So, what did they find?

The results were pretty impressive! Participants who ate mixed nuts daily saw significant improvements in their blood lipid profiles. Specifically, their levels of LDL cholesterol (often referred to as “bad” cholesterol) and other harmful lipoprotein particles decreased, while their overall cholesterol levels improved. This is important because high levels of LDL cholesterol are linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

The mixed nuts seemed to create a more “heart-healthy” profile in the participants’ blood. These changes aren’t just numbers on a blood test; they suggest a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack or stroke over time. In short, adding mixed nuts to your diet may not just make you feel good in the short term, but it could also provide lasting benefits for your heart health.

Why nuts are so heart-healthy

Different types of nuts

You might be wondering what makes nuts such a powerhouse for heart health. Here’s the scoop: Nuts, especially when consumed in their whole form, are packed with unsaturated fats, fiber, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals. These nutrients help regulate cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and improve blood vessel function.

For example:

  • Walnuts are particularly high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to help reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure.
  • Pistachios are rich in antioxidants and fiber, which help lower cholesterol and support healthy blood vessels.
  • Cashews offer a good amount of magnesium, which is vital for maintaining normal heart rhythm and regulating blood pressure.
  • Hazelnuts contain a variety of antioxidants and healthy fats that support cardiovascular health by reducing harmful cholesterol and inflammation.

Together, these nuts form a nutrient-dense snack that can have a positive impact on cardiovascular health, particularly when consumed regularly as part of a balanced diet.

Accessibility and dietary interventions

What makes this study especially exciting is its potential to serve as a simple, accessible intervention for older adults at high risk of heart disease. Obesity and being overweight are significant risk factors for CVD, and finding dietary strategies that can help manage these risks is a major focus in health research.

Nuts are widely available and relatively easy to incorporate into daily meals, whether as a snack, added to salads, or mixed into smoothies. Unlike many complex treatments or expensive medications, nuts offer a natural, affordable way to improve heart health, making them an attractive option for older adults and others at risk of CVD.

So, now you know, approximately 60g of mixed nuts can keep your heart running healthy. And, if you’re looking for nuts in bulk, we’ve got you covered!
