What happened?

On February 18, 2025, ZB Importing LLC voluntarily issued a recall for six varieties of Ulker brand snack rolls, biscuits, and wafers due to undeclared allergens. A consumer complaint about an allergic reaction prompted the recall. A labeling mishap led to wheat, eggs, and milk being omitted from the ingredient list. This highlights the importance of strong oversight within the co-manufacturing processes to prevent such errors.

These products were distributed in Ontario, Canada, and across the following U.S. states: AL, AR, CA, CT, CO, DC, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NE, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI and WV., making it crucial for consumers to check their snacks before taking a bite.

What caused the issue?

The culprit? A supplier’s translation mistake. Due to an error in multilingual labeling, essential allergen information failed to make it onto the product packaging. While this may sound like a small mix-up, for those with severe allergies, it’s a serious risk. Private label brands and their co-manufacturers must ensure that quality control measures catch such errors before products reach consumers.

The dangers of undeclared allergens

Undeclared allergens can lead to severe health risks, especially for individuals with food allergies or sensitivities. Common symptoms of allergic reactions include:

  • Mild Reactions: Itching, hives, skin rashes, swelling of the lips, face, or eyes
  • Moderate Reactions: Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea
  • Severe Reactions: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, dizziness, rapid heartbeat
  • Anaphylaxis (Life-Threatening): A severe allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention, including the use of an epinephrine auto-injector and emergency care

Who are the consumers at risk?

  • Children with Food Allergies: Kids are more vulnerable as their immune systems are still developing, and they may accidentally consume allergens.
  • Individuals with Known Food Sensitivities: Even trace amounts of an allergen can trigger reactions in sensitive individuals.
  • People with Compromised Immune Systems: Those with underlying conditions may experience more severe allergic responses.
  • Elderly Individuals: Older adults may have weaker immune responses and a higher risk of complications from an allergic reaction.
  • Pregnant Women: Food allergies during pregnancy can lead to added health concerns for both the mother and baby.

Behind the brand

ZB Importing LLC has been a known distributor of imported snacks, including Ulker, a popular Turkish brand. While this is their latest recall, mislabeling issues aren’t unheard of in the food industry. Similar incidents in the past have led to heightened scrutiny around allergen labeling, emphasizing the need for accurate, multilingual ingredient lists. Just this week, Naturipe Value Added Fresh LLC issued a recall for its Berry Buddies, Berries & Pancakes snack packs due to undeclared wheat and eggs.

“Accurate labeling isn’t optional—it’s essential. When allergens go undeclared, consumer health is at risk. This recall is a reminder that transparency and strict quality control must be a priority at every stage of food production.” Eran Mizrahi, CEO of Source86.

Ensuring safe eats

Mislabeling errors like this highlight the importance of transparent food labelingl. Co-packers and private label manufacturers must implement strict verification processes to prevent these costly mistakes. For consumers, staying informed and double-checking ingredient lists is key to avoiding unexpected allergic reactions.
