Bulk Seed Oils
Bulk seed oils are pressed or extracted from oilseeds and kernels and supplied for food manufacturing in five types: flaxseed, high oleic sunflower, chia seed, hemp seed, and argan. Flaxseed oil runs at more than 99 g fat per 100 g with moisture and volatiles of 0.1 percent maximum on organic grades, while high oleic sunflower oil carries 80 to 90.7 g monounsaturated fat per 100 g in a refined, bleached, deodorized, and winterized grade.
The range covers two commercial roles: omega 3 rich specialty oils such as flaxseed and chia for supplements, dressings, and cold applications, and stable, neutral high oleic sunflower oil for frying, baking, and shelf stable foods. Supply is drawn from pressers and refiners in Canada, China, Spain, and Paraguay. Conventional and certified organic grades are available depending on the oil. Certifications & Compliance
- Core Documentation: Certificate of Analysis, specification sheet, origin documentation, and SDS issued per lot, with moisture, colour, and fat composition reported on the COA.
- Certified Organic: Organic flaxseed and hemp seed oils ship with organic and transaction certificates, handled segregated from conventional stock.
- Microbiological and Aflatoxin Testing: Flaxseed oil lots are reported for plate count, yeast and mould, pathogens, and aflatoxin against the purchased specification.
- Allergen Statements: Supplier declarations confirm no major allergens in flaxseed, sunflower, and chia oils, with flax confirmed free at product, line, and facility level.
- Non GMO Declaration: Chia seed oil is supplied as a non GMO grade, supported by supplier declaration for each lot.
Production & Sourcing
Seed oils are produced close to where the seed is cleaned and stored, because pressing fresh, sound seed is what protects oil quality and oxidative stability. Source86 sources flaxseed oil from pressers in Canada and China, high oleic sunflower oil from a refiner in Spain, and chia seed oil from Paraguay. Specialty oils such as flaxseed and chia are kept unrefined to preserve their natural profile, while high oleic sunflower oil is fully refined for a neutral, stable cooking oil.
- Seed Cleaning: Incoming seed is cleaned of dust, stones, chaff, and foreign seeds, then checked for moisture before pressing.
- Pressing or Extraction: Oil is mechanically pressed from the seed or kernel, with specialty oils handled at controlled temperatures to protect sensitive fatty acids.
- Settling and Filtration: Crude oil is settled and filtered to remove fine solids, giving a clear oil within the moisture and volatiles limit.
- Refining for Sunflower Oil: High oleic sunflower oil is refined, bleached, deodorized, and winterized, removing colour, odour, and waxes for a neutral, clear oil.
- Nitrogen Protection: Oxygen sensitive oils such as flaxseed are blanketed with nitrogen in tanks and drums to slow oxidation during storage and transit.
- Testing, Packing, and Traceability: Each lot is tested against its specification, packed in sealed drums, totes, or bulk containers, and coded for lot traceability.
Applications
- Dietary Supplements: Softgel and liquid supplement manufacturers use flaxseed, chia, and hemp seed oils as plant based omega 3 sources.
- Dressings, Dips, and Cold Sauces: Salad dressings, vinaigrettes, and dips use flaxseed, chia, or hemp oil where the oil is never heated.
- Frying and Snack Production: Snack and foodservice fryers specify high oleic sunflower oil for long fry life and a neutral finished flavour.
- Bakery and Confectionery: Biscuits, crackers, cakes, and fillings use high oleic sunflower oil as a stable, neutral fat with long shelf life.
- Plant Based Foods: Dairy alternatives, meat alternatives, and vegan spreads blend seed oils for fat content, mouthfeel, and fatty acid positioning.
- Functional Beverages and Smoothies: Shakes, smoothie blends, and nutrition drinks add flaxseed or chia oil to deliver omega 3 per serving.
- Nutrition Blends: Nutrition formulators combine flaxseed, chia, and sunflower oils to reach target fatty acid ratios in liquid and powdered products.
- Spray Oils and Release Agents: High oleic sunflower oil serves in pan sprays, release oils, and coating oils because it resists gumming at heat.
- Gourmet and Finishing Oils: Argan and hemp seed oils are used as finishing oils for drizzling, specialty dressings, and premium ready meals.
- Cereals and Bars: Granola, clusters, and snack bars use high oleic sunflower oil as a binding and coating fat that resists rancidity.
Physical & Functional Characteristics
Clear, free flowing liquids at room temperature, with no visible sediment on filtered and refined grades.
Flaxseed oil clear pale yellow to golden, chia oil light yellow, and refined high oleic sunflower oil very pale at Lovibond red 1.5.
High oleic sunflower oil is neutral, while unrefined flaxseed, chia, hemp, and argan oils carry mild nutty or seed notes of their source.
Refined sunflower oil is odourless, and specialty oils have a light seed aroma that turns sharp or painty once oxidation begins.
Each oil is single ingredient, 100 percent oil from its named seed or kernel, with no additives on the grades supplied.
About 99 to 100 g fat and 895 to 900 kcal per 100 g, with protein, carbohydrate, and sodium close to zero.
High oleic sunflower oil is dominated by monounsaturated fat, while flaxseed and chia oils are dominated by polyunsaturated omega 3 fat.
Moisture and volatiles run at 0.1 percent maximum on refined sunflower and organic flaxseed grades, limiting hydrolytic rancidity.
Light, heat, and oxygen accelerate rancidity, most of all in flaxseed oil, which is why nitrogen blanketing and cold storage are specified.
Plant based, vegan, and naturally gluten free, with no major allergens declared on the flaxseed, sunflower, and chia grades.
Funcionality
- Fatty Acid Delivery: Flaxseed and chia oils supply alpha linolenic acid, the plant omega 3, letting formulators make fatty acid claims from a single oil.
- Heat and Fry Stability: High oleic sunflower oil resists oxidation under prolonged heat, extending fry life and reducing off flavours in finished snacks.
- Neutral Flavour Base: Refined high oleic sunflower oil adds fat and mouthfeel without masking delicate flavours in baked goods and sauces.
- Emulsion Building: Seed oils form the oil phase of dressings, mayonnaise style sauces, and creamy dips, with stability set by the emulsifier system.
- Shelf Life Extension in Finished Goods: Replacing polyunsaturated oils with high oleic sunflower oil slows rancidity in crackers, cereals, and snack coatings.
- Cold Application Only for Omega 3 Oils: Flaxseed, chia, and hemp oils oxidise quickly when heated, so they perform best added after cooking or in cold processed products.
- Clear Liquid Handling: The winterized sunflower grade stays clear and liquid under refrigeration, avoiding clouding in chilled dressings and sauces.
