Bettergoods Recalls Pistachio Nut Butter Over Possible Salmonella Contamination

MELVILLE, N.Y. (August 3, 2026). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Botticelli Foods is recalling one lot of Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. According to the agency, the company distributed the affected product exclusively through Walmart stores in 19 states before routine testing detected the harmful bacteria. So far, the FDA said no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recall.

Bettergoods recall: quick summary

Botticelli Foods has recalled one lot of Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter after routine testing detected possible Salmonella contamination. Specifically, Gustibus Alimentari Srl manufactured the product in Italy, Botticelli Foods imported it into the United States, and Walmart sold it exclusively through stores across 19 states. Although no illnesses have been reported, consumers should not eat the recalled nut butter and should instead return it to Walmart for a full refund. Importantly, the recall affects only one production lot.

What happened?

According to the FDA, Botticelli Foods initiated the recall after Walmart learned that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) had detected Salmonella during routine testing of three jars collected from a Walmart retail location. As a result, regulators said the findings prompted the company to voluntarily remove the affected product from the marketplace.

Specifically, the recalled product is Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter packaged in a 6.7-ounce (190 g) glass jar with UPC 194346207968, Lot Code LB028ACP04, and an expiration date of January 28, 2027. According to the FDA, Gustibus Alimentari Srl manufactured the pistachio butter in Assoro, Italy, Botticelli Foods imported it into the United States, and Walmart distributed it exclusively through its stores in 19 states.

Meanwhile, the FDA said no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recall. However, the agency warned in its recall notice that Salmonella “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

What caused the issue?

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services detected Salmonella in three jars during routine retail sampling. Walmart notified Botticelli Foods of the findings on July 17, 2026, and the company subsequently initiated the recall in coordination with the FDA.

Pistachio butter can present a food safety concern even though it contains little available moisture. If contaminated, the product may expose consumers to Salmonella, which can cause fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, with nausea or vomiting also possible. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to severe illness. In some cases, the infection can spread beyond the digestive system. No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

FSQA insight

“Salmonella presents a unique challenge in low-moisture foods such as nut butters because consumers often don’t associate these products with bacterial contamination,” said Divina Grace Barroso, Head of Food Safety and Quality Assurance at Source86.

“Strong supplier verification, environmental monitoring, validated preventive controls, and routine microbiological testing all play an essential role in reducing contamination risks before products reach retailers.”

Behind the brand

Botticelli Foods is a New York-based importer and distributor of specialty Italian food products. For this recall, Gustibus Alimentari Srl manufactured the Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter in Assoro, Italy, and Walmart distributed it exclusively through stores across the United States.

According to the company, Walmart informed Botticelli Foods that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services detected Salmonella in samples collected during routine testing at a retail location. In response, Botticelli Foods initiated the recall in coordination with the FDA. Additionally, the company said the recall affects only one production lot.

Meanwhile, Source86 reached out to Botticelli Foods for comment regarding the circumstances surrounding the contamination but has not yet received a response.

Regulatory context

Although poultry, fresh produce, and other fresh foods account for many Salmonella recalls, manufacturers of low-moisture products such as nut butters must also implement rigorous preventive controls. Manufacturers, importers, and retailers rely on supplier verification, environmental monitoring, microbiological testing, and traceability systems to identify contamination quickly and minimize consumer exposure.

This recall also highlights the important role of routine regulatory sampling in detecting potential food safety risks before widespread illness occurs.

Ensuring safe eats

Overall, this recall demonstrates why preventive food safety systems remain critical throughout the supply chain, from manufacturing and import controls to retail surveillance. In particular, early detection and rapid product traceability help reduce consumer exposure and strengthen confidence in food safety programs.

As a result, consumers who purchased the affected Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter should not consume it and should return it to Walmart for a refund. Additionally, checking the UPC, lot code, and expiration date is the fastest way to determine whether a product is part of the recall.

Nut butters are a low-moisture food where Salmonella can survive for months, so Source86 requires validated roasting data from pistachio and nut suppliers. Sourcing pistachios or nut butters? Ask us about roasting validation.
