Production & Sourcing
Source86 sources maca from established growers and processors in the high-altitude Andes of Peru, where nearly all of the world’s maca is cultivated. Working with multiple Peruvian processors supports consistent supply, grade flexibility and reduced dependency on any single producer.
How It’s Produced
- Harvesting: Mature maca roots are harvested once the plants complete their growth cycle.
- Cleaning: Roots are cleaned to remove soil and impurities.
- Gelatinization (gelatinized grades): Roots are cooked under controlled time and temperature to gelatinize the starch.
- Drying: Roots are dried, by air-drying for raw grades or after cooking for gelatinized grades.
- Milling and Sieving: Dried maca is milled and sieved to a fine, consistent powder.
- Testing and Packing: Each lot is tested against specification and packed for bulk distribution.
Harvest & Supply Availability
Maca is a cold-weather crop. In Peru, harvest typically begins in May or June and extends through August or September, depending on region and altitude. Dried root is stored and processed year-round, so bulk powder is available throughout the year.
Applications
- Dietary Supplements: Powders, capsules and tablets.
- Functional Foods and Sports Nutrition: Meal replacements, fortified snacks and sports nutrition products.
- Beverages: Smoothies, shakes, energy drinks and herbal tea blends.
